McNamara tends to work intuitively, guided by the textural and visual qualities of her materials. She is influenced by an aesthetic and spiritual tradition which has an appreciation of the impermanence and decay inherent in all things. In her work, McNamara travels back and forth between past and present : the trace of memory is always part of the present. She is drawn in her mark-making to ambiguity, delicacy, fragility, nuance and interiority.
